Manual
Colourido is a truly collaborative work-of-art, proposing an entire new
dimension to a creative project. By stimulating observation,
collaborative experimentation Manual Colourido enables creativity through
innovative uses of technology.
Bringing
together digital photography as a tool and excuse to literally ‘focus’
through the lenses topics of significance, image manipulation and
juxtaposition to re-create visually and metaphorically the ‘bigger
picture’ and painting as a traditional way to express, and feel a
representation or an artificially created reality.
The
project starts by each
child, armed with a digital camera, taking pictures that communicate their
realities and their communities. Using image manipulation techniques each
picture was then combined with all the other children’s pictures to form a
complete landscape that is relevant to their surroundings - based on reality
(the actual pictures) but yet surreal (via the artist interpretation of the
given images). Fabiane Perrella created these digital landscapes from all
the individual photographs taken by the children. When each landscape was
finally approved by the children it was divided by the number of children
taking part on the project. Each child, following very simple guide lines,
painted a single painting that corresponded to a fragment of the entire
landscape. Finally when all paintings are assembled together the result
is a visually striking collectively painted gigantic landscape. With 300
children taking part Manual
Colourido gigantic landscapes are an assembly of 165 individual smaller
paintings reaching 2 x 9 metres each.
A short film was also produced to contextualise the entire process and experience for the British public. This film is a poetic documentary that extracts key practical and emotive information to capture the sensibility of the exhibition’s visitors in the UK.
The
book created by the flour's team illustrates and reveal Manual Colourido’s
entire process from conception to realization.
It’s value lays not only in its relevance as an artistic document
and a record of the practical and emotive aspects of an essentially
collaborative art project from the artists and the children’s perspectives
but also is a space for the many people involved in the project to express
their thoughts, ideas and experiences on the delicate issue of the poorer
Brazilian children. José
Mauricio Bustani , the Brazilian
Ambassador in Britain, wrote the foreword for this book which is one
of the elements of the Manual Colourido’s exhibition tour
in the UK.

The profits of the sales will be given to Projeto Renascer and ISMEP (the two charities who’s children that took part in Manual Colourido in Brazil) and invested in a new social art projects starting in 2007.

project’s underlying principle and aims include:

Promoting
the use of the arts and technology as a mechanism for the children and
young people to express the nature of their social reality and overcome
their social marginalisation, exclusion and ‘invisibility’, giving
them a voice.

Promoting
self-esteem, technological and creative exposure and development amongst
Brazilian street children and young people as well as those at risk.
- Promoting
and encouraging the children’s enquiring and expressive nature.
- Encouraging the sharing of good practice, collaborative experimentation and discussion with those working with children.
